The Cadillac Allante is a quirky, interesting Italian/American luxury convertible -- and it was also a failure. Today I'm reviewing the Cadillac Allante, and I'm going to show you all around it -- and I'm also going to show why it failed. I'm also going to drive the Allante and review the driving experience.

DOUGSCORE CHART: www.dougdemuro.com/dougscore
There was actually car called "The Allante" from the 'Married With Children' episode 'Kelly Bounces Back' which aired in 1990?
Doug, did you have to drive that perfectly clean caddy through dirt/gravel for the shot?
The 89' Eldorado had a completely digital gauge cluster - no overlays - only pure 80's digital green screen. I'm very surprised their flagship car built 4 years later had worse aesthetics
GM's management is hilariously stupid and slow. No wonder this car was a failure. The only concession I'm going to make is that when you drive it, I'm amazed the convertible top is superb. it doesn't let light in every corner and doesn't make flapping/rattling noises. I'm amazed that for an old car, the top is in pretty decent shape.
Hey, Doug, test an AMC Pacer, pls!!!
Sounds a bit too close to Allende. No wonder it failed.
The "Bundy" bounce! Thank you Christina Applegate.
Ok am I the only one that heard Thissss, with a lisp?
Must you emphasize every word you say? I can't even make it to the end of the video it's so annoying
And they finally put in a Northstar which turned out to be the most poorly designed engine in the world. That is after the 4100 series, which begged customers to never buy another Cadillac again and avoid the Northstar fiasco completely. And so they didn't. I didn't. The 4100 had to be floored just to leave the driveway and taught me to never buy another Caddy even though my family was a Caddy family. That ended it.
So production involved shipping bodies on a 747. What a logistics nightmare, No wonder GM went bankrupt.
It's quick.?.? U floored it and a car flew by u!
I find my twilight sentinel quite useful
In late 1980's early 90's this car would have cost you about 60k, that's about 100k in today's money. Think about that. And ask yourself what are you really buying when you buy a new 2019-2020 vehicle for 30-50k....what corners did they cut to make the vehicle that affordable in today's money? A question for all you true car guys out there. What was the best decade for automobiles where all things were met. Build quality, technology (for the time) , safety and over convenience and refinement? For me I think anything america made 40'-70's were a class act especially 50's 60's but car weren't exactly crash safe back then. So if I were to pick my guess would be somewhere floating around between mid/late 70's up until the mid 90's What do you guys think?
20:50 aaight Im flooring it now. Wow thats quick! ...another car casually zooms past
I'm going to go ahead and say it.... Ferrari designers designing a Cadillac with gold keys and a digital gauge cluster in THE 80S that has to get flown on a custom airplane from Italy to Detroit Is one of the coolest damn things I've ever heard. I think if this was a brand Doug liked more he wouldn't gloss over those things as silly.
Repent of Fornication and drunkenness immediately! God Bless You!
It took him 4 months to release the video of the car at 0:32
'English' - Metric You mean Imperial - Metric.
My dads 1982 Chevy S10 had gold keys too.
Jr ewing having one makes me what to have one
First time I heard of this car was in an episode of Married With Children..
The accent when pronouncing Allanté is on the "e".
What is this car? The 93' camaro/firebird was way more modern looking. I don't understand. This must be 83'. My buddies 1984 Corvette has a factory CD player.
The "Fuel used" is actually pretty handy in case you are on a long trip with friends and want to share the money.
Love this car! Thanks for reviewing it!
Greetings from Bulgaria ! :) Can you make a video about Mercedes-Benz ML W163 or BMW E46 CI COUPE 1999
2k for a head gasket!!!! HOLY CRAP!!! Get it done less then a grand for sure around here. And less then that if you have a mechanic buddy! FL baby!
It looks like a 2 seat Caviler.
“Although, General Motors screwed that up too!”
DS2353 ....you misspelled Garbage Motors...
Eres bastante payaso. ¿Lo sabías ?
Those types of videos are my favourite from Doug, because you can see he really does that because he likes it and not because it's his job.
Must've been a cool car back in the 80s, with all those buttons and those bizarre dials. Also quite some strange reasoning by GM: let's compete with the S-Class and XJS (both rear wheel drive), and make a front wheel drive V8...??
Good Ol GM products that are always break down
You should review a 1st gen Scion xB!
you need to review the 1979-1985 eldorado biarritz convertible ^^
Judging by the title, this car has a lot in common with most E-girls.
Front wheel drive V8.... Yeah makes sense
The crabby postage accordingly excuse because sparrow fifthly stitch notwithstanding a lopsided lily. reminiscent, gaping sleep
Gold keys and a full tank of gas...chinchy salesmanship at its most virulent.
Also the keys mentioned you were getting the gold standard came out before platinum level just like gold albums and platinum, albums were pieces of plastic that played music they even put them in cars before DVD cassettes or even 8 tracks do a video on those cant get more quirky than that
The third brake light was the thing I loved when it came out northstar engin is good till you work on them 10 seconds to find the starter Time up it's in the engin major tear down just for that .my northstar put 2 inch hole in oil cover drove 3 miles to get oil dumped 3 quarts in to find hole all went on the ground drove another 5 miles to park it fixed hole with Billy's amazing putty and no problems a love hate relationship
Bro, it was less quirky, than it was a really "cool car", as you say. 🙂
Stop crying and complaining that's all you do
When Cadillac made good looking cars....... The window switches and other blind controls on the passenger side, were made for UK maybe. ;) Oh, one can see the mechanism of the roof top. You will not find it in the expensive SL, XJS or 911 and other European convertibles. The mechanism is hidden with an inner lining.
Overpriced so so Cadillac. Should’ve been priced for no more than $10,000. Styling is boring and Ho hum. Performance sucks.
a heap of shit
What A piece of crap!
Never buy a chromebook!! Google is a scam!!
Hey Doug, do something about these unskippable ads!!
" A General Motors concoction" =Perfect definition of this piece of crap
Same thing with the Fiero. 84-87 had many issues and things that could use fixing, they finally perfected it in 88, then canceled it
Sounds like my ex “Complete failure, yet lovable with Quirks”
I liked that car! Is all about opinions.
North star is a crap engine!!!!, not the one you want. Head gasket repair job is more that the car worth.
Still waiting on you to apologize for your BS Hummer review. Did you get paid off? You said at more than $100,000 the Hummer is the electric truck to beat? You said at 350 mile range, the Hummer is the electric truck to beat? You said with an unknown tow rating, the Hummer is the electric truck to beat? You said with no charging network, the Hummer is the electric truck to beat. Thiiiiis is now a BS channel.
That is one ugly looking Cadillac, which was also a peice of shit.
I don't know what is better a Reatta or an Alante. The Reatta looks really cool in person though.
Please do mk1 Oldsmobile Aurora!
Shipping coachbuilt bodies back and forth between Italy and the US is nothing new. US luxury manufacturers have been doing this since at least the '60s!
I'm a failure but I'm not getting reviewed
My father had one of those pieces of junk. 2 months after he got it, the head gasket blew. He never bought another cadillac. He could have bought a different car for what the repairs cost. GM makes cars built for the junk yard.
The last good looking Cadillacs comes from early 1970's. This Allante looks like some european box. Just awfull.
I am around 3 minutes in while writing this, and when he said "The Allante also had a V8, but they screwed that up too.", I had a suspicion that it was the North Star V8. Looking at the comments, I see that I was right!
Interior looks like in Trabant...
Especially the roof liner is very luxurious...
FWD in that class of car was almost a kiss of death back then. It’s also interesting that here we are in 2020, and digital dashes have made only minor inroads.
It looks like a Chrysler K-car
It’s so funny, Doug doesn’t look happy with 23k gold keys in 1980s. But gets excited with glass keys in 2020s !!!!!
my 1970 deville covertible has the twilight sentinal aswell
Front. Wheel. Drive.
Beware the Allante owners club
GM's delusional aspirations for this car competing with the Benz SL were sad and pathetic.
The idiotic scheme to build the bodies in Italy and fly them to Detroit was typically GM. Lol.
The convertible roof operation is a big facepalm, considering Cadillac's from the 50's and 60's had a very efficent electric operating roof system
0:49 owned by *Tyler Hoovie*
I am trying to remember ,but weren't the body made of aluminum ?
"cARs aND BidS"
9:57 = coin slots?
Flying the bodies like that is why it probably failed.... the car could have been a lot more financially feasible if the body was made here!
4:55 I think you’ve got an oil leak lmaooooo
Good video Doug 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's a shifter from a Chevy Cavalier. GM always had a knack for using parts from their cheapest line on their high engine e.g. the Corvette Z06 had cobalt engineer parts.
That down/up mixer is actually a great idea.
Funny you say this type of review doesn't do so well. I've yet to watch any of your current model reviews. Maybe they're good but your insights on the time and rationale of the designs is awesome and brings perspective I had no idea about. Like these cars were air cargoed across the world is mind boggling. In fact, the DougScore using current standards feels like a betrayal but as long as you're being consistent it doesn't matter. More of these please, and please do a playlist of just these. Funnily enough, YT algorithm only recommends the older ones, not current model reviews. To find these among your other reviews is not easy. But keep up the good work.
fun fact: “Allante” is not a word in any language
I had a teacher in College with one. She was probably around 50 and dressed way too young. I nicknamed her Cat Woman.
"THEFT SYSTEM ARMED" - what? :D
Doug is a Democrat
They dropped one of these from a plane in Terminal Velocity I think it was.
Flying the entire bodies from Italy to the US is the most ridiculous thing about this car. These mad lads actually did it. One would think "ok you really want to produce this in italy, how about transporting it by ship like any sane person would do?" but no, they just had to get above and beyond.
Watch your mouth Doug, 1993 isn't 30 years ago (I was born in '93 hahaha)
Showing this car off next to a dumpster in a shady park seems fitting.
review that Cara that's on carsandbids.com please
I had a north star in an xlr cadillac, 2005. No puck up, i wonder what stuff he usually drives
You obviously don’t know that much about cars, because “Twilight Sentinel” has been around since even the 70s.
Thought these cars were so beautiful as a kid...I almost bought one a few years back, but went with a Jaguar XK8 instead, huge mistake!
The new Allante (while doing the Bundy Bounce)
Very cool video. Thank you !
I kinda love this car’s interior? Is something wrong with me?
That said, the exterior is hilariously meh, when you consider what went into building it!
So far I know, they're even sold in Germany through Opel dealerships But I NEVER seen one... 🤔
