Here’s Why the 1996 Chevy Impala SS Was Really Cool

The 1996 Chevy Impala SS was a bright spot of the 1990s -- and a star in the General Motors lineup. Today I'm reviewing the '96 Impala SS, and I'm going to show you all around the Impala SS. Then I'm going to drive the Chevy Impala SS and explain what it's like on the road.

  • Lord, The Caprice and the Impala in 96 came with the same motor at the same horsepower, as did the Buick Roadmaster and the Cadillac Fleetwood. And they all had remotes. And I’m pretty sure the Impala had an optional 5 speed at some point. A lot of guys on the Impala SS forum do swaps on their Caprices and Roadmasters. Also, you could get a package on the Caprice(a B4U packaged car(I have one)) that added quick ratio steering, sports suspension, and factory dual exhaust. The car tops out at 108 on the governor, but the Impala does not. The only difference between my Caprice and an Impala is drums on the back of the Caprice, discs on the Impala, analog gauges on the Impala, digital on the Caprice, and the wheels were different. Other than that, my cars sounds exactly like that when I goose it too.

When I lived in California in the late nineties I could buy a car cheaper because of manual shifter. I sold the car to socal local friend. He couldn't drive a stick so he gave it to his Swedish girlfriend that couldn't drive anything else but a stick.

  • Other info not in this video; when I ordered mine in '96 the only 2 options you could choose were CD or cassette and color. Black, dark cherry or green grey. 12 bolt limited slip rear axle with 3.08 ratio was standard. Power antenna and speed compensated volume on the stereo were standard as well. Factory equipped with Z speed rated tires. These cars run and handle way better than what you would think. Especially if you were to install the body mount bushings along the frame that GM intentionally left out to enhance ride quality over the 9C1 police Caprice that these are built upon. 6700 miles and counting. 😉

  • I envy all of you guys living in areas where there's now snow and road salt. This 96 car looks like it came of the showroom floor! I have a 91 Caprice Classic and it spent all of it's life in the rustbelt and never had a garage to sit in just curb parked or behind an appartment complex. The clear coat is peeling, the dash board is cracked, the body is rusting away, the radiator mount ist rusting away, the brake lines and transmission oil cooler lines rusted away and the chrome trim is getting gray from the road salt it just looks really beat up. I want to keep this car but the cold climate and the road salt really kills cars after 20 years or so. And mine just turned 30..

  • IDK...I grew up with cars like this, I borrowed my Dad’s ‘71 Caprice Classic 2 door hardtop with the 454 V8 for Grad Prom, and it was a very pretty, elegant and sleek looking car, fast AF, but it’s hard to look back and justify all that bulk and those huge thirsty engines that weren’t as powerful as my VW Golf is today. And like Doug commented about this Impala, it’s a frickin’ land yacht, almost takes up 1.5 parking spots, you’d get winded running around it once, and where you think it would shine with a cushy, roomy back seat, it ain’t there, where did the room go? The year before grad I was a back seat dweller when we went on a road trip to Disneyland, Vancouver to LA, and let me tell you, I looked really forward to stopping and stretching my legs, I was sitting behind my Dad, and we’re both about 5’8”, it should have been like the family room sofa back there, but it so wasn’t. I don’t know how GM managed to make cars so long that the front and rear ends were assigned different postal (zip) codes, and yet didn’t have a HUGE trunk, and with a cramped back seat. .
