The E32 BMW 750iL was BMW's flagship luxury sedan from 30 years ago -- and it was the first V12-powered luxury sedan in this segment. Today I'm reviewing the 750iL, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a special BMW luxury sedan -- then I'm going to drive the 750iL and review the BMW 750iL driving experience.

  • Some comments: The rear seat buckles are in thr oppsite side due to the rear seat passengers shouldn´t collide the heads in an accident. Info from the brouchure I had back in the days. The V12 produces 300 hp, at least here in Europe. As you said, Mercedes was wayyy later with the V12, the needed something that was special... Mercedes V12 produced 300 kW (instead of hp) that equals to 408 hp. But only some years later du to emission rules down to 397 hp, but 292 kW wasn´t that cool.... :D Thank you for this review of my "Traumwagen" (dream car) of the 80´s and early 90´s!!!!

  • My first car was an E32 735IL. Still one of my favorite cars and it's still on the road today. BMW doesn't make them like they used to. You can really tell the difference between an 80's BMW and a mid 2000's BMW. On the shift mode selector mine had an S button that you could get to by pushing the whole slider down. I think the E was for Economy because that was the standard mode every time you started the car. Mine had a quirk where the BC would go into German every couple starts.

  • BMW of earlier years (not sure about modern ones) had an extra reservoir with a special cleaning fluid in the engine bay which was activated by the S function ( I had it in an old 5 series). It was more aggressive, so no need to use it all the time e.g. in rainy weather. But if you had a long journey on the Autobahn with a lot of dead bugs on the windscreen it came in handy... I guess that is also the case here.

It was his baby and he really loved it, even though it had to go to service all the time and was something of a lemon (first year model.) I drove it fairly regularly. But one night in the late 90's while in high school, I got in an accident and totaled it. Still one of my worst memories having to wake my dad in the middle of the night, with the car on a tow truck in the drive way.

  • I owned one of these from 1991-2002, and absolutely loved the car. I had it Dinan-modified, which gave it more push and actually improved the mpg. It remains the most comfortable cross-country driving vehicle I've ever owned, smooth, quiet and relaxing to drive, but unlike a Cadillac, it handled extremely well at speed in winding country roads. Maintenance was a bit spendy unsurprisingly. We lived in Detroit at the time. My car was black, and I'm sure we were seen as entrepreneurs in illicit enterprises. You didn't mention the window shades, the reclining back seats, the incredible fit and finish of all surfaces nor the leather quality which shows in your vehicle. I still think it is a beautiful car and a real benchmark t the time.

  • A "one" for acceleration in your Doug Score? Pardon the phrase, but Doug "screwed the pooch" (sorry Noodle) on that one. Doug obviously missed out on the auto transmission's "S" mode. This puts the transmission into "sport mode." Sport mode locks out the overdrive fourth gear and puts the car into a much more aggressive shift mode. You're selling quirks and features, and you miss out of the car's signature advantage of having twelve cylinders? This one wasn't even a particularly well kept example. The headlights obviously had their then-revolutionary projector headlamps replaced with conventional sealed beams by a cheap skate owner, and that engine compartment has obviously seen better days. The owner didn't even bother to get that yellow aged cosmoline off the intake manifolds.

In fact, the simpler fluid spray on this BMW is not only nothing remarkable, it's not as efficient as systems that wiped the light lens as well. • Dear Duog, as usual, I enjoyed your video immensely; this one is special to me, since I've always had a faible for the BMW 750 iL, ever since it was intruduced in the late 1980's. Nowadays, I drive a low-mileage Mercedes S-Class from 1990; I chose the Mercedes, since, in my opinion, the long tern quality is a lot better. Anyway, I remember from back then that the reason the rear seatbelts were "backwards" was that the passengers would be drawn into the middle of the car in an emergency breaking situation, pulling them away from the doors, a kind of pre-rear-seat-passenger-side-airbag safety system. A bit analogous, but technically, it could've worked... Thanks for a terrific youtube-channel!

Rear seats are also powered. Steering wheels has speed control servotronic the faster you go the harder it gets. Very very nice features at the time. The M mode in the transmission is almost manual if you start in 3rd gear it will start from 3 gear very helpful on ice when taking off with all that tourqe.

  • 7:35 The "S" is for the initial letter of the German name of the headlight cleaning unit, i.e. "Scheinwerferreinigungsanlage". There are two or even four jets that spray a special headlight cleaning fluid onto the headlights if one pushes the "S" button. In the manual it is also referred to as "intensive cleaning". If I remember correctly it is also triggered every couple of times when you just pull the lever to have you windshield cleaned.

Despite some comments here, the e32 was a good car and the m70 v12 basically bulletproof. Good transmission also. Only parts of the undercarriage and cooling system wore out. The interior was at the time already outdated with those pushbuttons and stupid lightswitch. The e38 aged more gracefully IMHO.
